Convert a ProxMox .raw to .qcow2

Introduction

To make full use of a ProxMox backup functionality, you’ll need to convert (of install) your Windows VMs with a .qcow2 format.

If you already installed your windows VM with a .raw extension you can convert the disk image using the following command.

The Setup

  • A Debian 6 install
  • A ProxMox 1.9 install
  • A Windows VM installed as .raw

How to set this up

Stop the VM in question.

Convert the .raw to .qcow2 using a command like this:

qemu-img convert -p -O qcow2 /var/lib/vz/images/200/vm-200-disk-1.raw /var/lib/vz/images/200/vm-200-disk-1.qcow2
